Getting Started
To get started with Pengis you will need at least an enclosure, a Pengi and some food. The starter kit contains an enclosure, two pengis, a food bowl and two task stations. While you don't strictly need task stations, they are part of the Pengi fun!
First rez your enclosure in a suitable space. If you rotate it, only rotate by 90 degress - pengis roam on a square area on the X and Y axis, if your enclosure to some other angle, they will walk through the fence (while staying in range.)
Next rez your pengis they will be in a disabled state to begin with, click them and select "Enclosure" from the menu, then click on the enclosure you want your pengi in. Your Pengi will move to the center of the enclosure (or as close as it can get), and begin moving.
Pengis require food, so rez your food bowl somewhere within your enclosure - your Pengi will need to be able to reach the food! if it can't get to it, it cant eat from it. A single food bowl will feed one Pengi for two weeks.
Enclosures
Enclosures are prebuilt habitats for Pengis. They come in a range of designs, some including options like snow on and off. Enclosures act as a "Home Object" which defines a range in which your enclosed Pengis can roam.
If you want to build your own enclosure, there is the option of purchasing a "Pengi Marker", this can be placed at the center of your enclosure, and when clicked you can define the range, rez a handy (temp-prim) guide, or "enclose" your Pengis. Pengi markers support a range of 2m up to 10m, so an enclosre that is 4m x 4m or 20m x 20m. It's important to note, it will only recognize the first two decimal places, so 3.59m is ok, 3.598m will be truncated (not rounded) to 3.59m
By default, anyone with land access can add a Pengi to your enclosure and those Pengis can use your task stations, this enables you to have a Pengi party! However, they can only eat from foodbowls where they have permission to. Enclosures can also be toggled to Owner or Group only.
Task Stations & Avatars
Task stations are little stations that your pengi can perform tasks at. Tasks performed can earn the owner badges, and badges make you awesome. The may also affect breeding, but that's a secret shh!!
Task stations must be rezzed inside the enclosure, like food a pengi must pe able to reach it to perform tasks at it.
Each task station supports two different tasks, they have sounds and particle effects that affect your pengis when they are performing a task. If you find the sounds annoying, you can turn them off via the task station's touch menu.
Pengis can complete up to 20 different tasks a day (that count). After they have performed 20 tasks, they will continue to do tasks, but they won't count towards badges or your Pengis task totals. Tasks may only be completed once per station to count. So, if you have one "Little Bed", each pengi can complete 2 tasks at that station a day. If you have two Little Beds your pengis can complete the Little Bed tasks twice (once at each station) and have them count.
Your Pengi can meet avatars in their enclosures, they will come up to you (if you stand still long enough) and inspect you. Each Pengi can meet up to 20 different avatars a day, after that the pengi will continue to meet avatars, but they will not count towards their total. The same avatar can only be met once a day.
There is currently no special purpose to meeting avatars, it's just a bit of fun (for now).
Badges
When a Pengi completes a task enough times, the player will earn a badge. Currently at 60x you will earn a "Normal" (Silver edged) badge and at 160x you will earn an "Expert" (Gold edged) badge. A player can only earn a badge once, so only the first Pengi a player owns that reaches the target will award the badge - subsequent pengis will still accrue tasks, but no badges will be awarded
If a Pengi transfers ownership, the task counts are reset - so you can't accrue 59 task repeatitions and then sell the pengi and have the buyer get the badge on the next task.
Badges are displayed in your portal web page, or you can also purchase a "Pengi Badge Board" which can display up to 9 of your favourite badges per board. (You can actually display your favourite badge multiple times on the badge board, if you really like it).
Breeding
Pengis reach breeding age at age 10, and will breed once every 7 days, provided they are in an enclosure and happy. A pengi can only breed with another pengi in the same enclosure, so if you want to pair them off, just put them in another enclosure! They also can not be disabled, as Pengis need to be able to move to get to their partner.
Happiness
Fed pengis are happy, however if they run out of food to eat and they get very hungry, they will become flat, then sad, then depressed. Only happy Pengis breed - flat, sad and depressed pengis will need to be fed and become happy again before they will breed.
Once a pengi's hunger reaches 100% the pengi will gain unhappiness at the rate of 1% every hour.
To gain happiness feed the pengi and while the pengi remains below 100% hunger it will gain happiness at a rate of 1% every 30 minutes. Depressed pengis are 100% unhappy, sad pengis between 50% and 100% and flat pengis between 1% and 50%
Traits
Pengis have 6 known traits; eyes, beak, feathers, down, feet and tail. There is a 7th trait, but well keep that secret for now :)
Starter pengis have a random selection from starter traits, non starters carry 4 genes of each trait from their predecessors.
Different traits have different methods of mutations, feathers, down and tail genes can mutate into a brand new gene each 5 generations, eyes can be mixed to create new genes. Beak and feet require filling out a linage tree to unlock. No mutations are guarantied they only happen if their prerequisites are met and on a chance percentage.
If a mutation happens, that gene will always be the shown trait.
Limited edition pengis are pengis with at least one unique trait that does not pass, they will have a new trait that does pass in place of the non-passing trait. These are sold in the store, or available for aurora points. Pengis obtained this way are starter pengis, in that their hidden genes are chosen at random from starter traits.
There are also seasonal pengis, these are limited edition pengis which have a chance to be laid during certain times of the year. Their hidden genes will be inherited from their parents.
Not all eye, beak and feet combinations will give a new gene, some are dead ends.
Collecting Badges also may unlock certain traits, but I don't want to give that away yet :)
Redeliveries & Updating
Sometimes Second Life may eat your Pengi, as it sometimes has an appetite to NO-COPY objects. In this case, you can redeliver your pengi using a Redelivery Nest. Redelivery nests can be obtained from Xundra's Stuff or requested directly from your web portal.
To send a lost Pengi for redelivery (in the case where you can't find, or no longer have the pengi) go to your web portal, find the pengi, and click the redelivery icon (green circle arrows). Then copy the redelivery code and paste it into the dialog of your Redelivery nest (Touch Menu -> Live Pengis -> Get 1).
In the case of an update, new redelivery nests will be issued, and updating your pengis can be done via the redelivery system. Pengis and eggs can be sent for redelivery via their touch menu, or via the web portal, Starter eggs can not be redelivered.
Retirement
Pengis retire at age 120. They will no longer breed or do tasks, they will also no longer need food.
